The reason most golf instruction doesn't do much for us is that golf is really about FEEL and most instruction is about position. Position of the hands, position of the feet, position of the address, position at the top of the back swing, etc.
We look at these positions, and try to copy them, but we're using our sense of feel to put us in the position. This would be like trying to interpret a Russian document with only a mastery of English.
We have to assume that what we're feeling in the take away position, for example , is the result of actually being in the right position.
To further confuse our senses, we have to assume that the pictures of the position we're looking at and trying to copy, are actually achievable for us given our personal physique and level or agility.
In short, in trying to convert a picture of a position into a feeling...well, something always get lost in the translation.
Wouldn't it be nice if somehow we could get a feel transfusion - like a blood transfusion - and basically have the proper feel of the swing downloaded directly into our bodies minus the translation barrier?
I really think that the golf swing is as much a natural thing for us as putting a fork into our mouths. Sure...you can counter with the fact that we began practicing with a fork at the age of one.
Here's the point: If we had never picked up a fork until age 30, we still would have been able to fork a piece of steak and convey it to our mouths on the first try in most cases. And by the end of our first meal using a fork, we'd be doing pretty good..
We all can use a club to hit a golf ball in a general direction the first time. If we'd never seen a golf swing in our life, we'd do pretty good after a round. Our senses would help us swing harder when trying for long distances and softer for shorter distances. Our back swing would just naturally happen without conscious thought and would automatically adjust for the distances involved.
You see, the problem we have is that whether or not we've ever swung a club before, we've seen someone else do it -either in real life or on television. So beginning with our first ever swing we're already subconsciously trying to copy what we've seen rather than just doing what comes naturally.

I have read a number of golf books over the years and what I enjoyed about this book was its simple style and information. It was an easy read that made sense to me and was understandable without getting too technical. I liked the comics in the book along with all the photogrpahs to go along with the dialogue. Having numerous sports celebrities doing the drills along with other non pros gave me the feeling that we are all in the same boat and going through similar problems. This book addressed many important issues which was excellent!

I don't do resoulutions but after reading Clay's no nonsense approach to golf fitness, I decided to take up a 'winter project' to tone up specifically with golf in mind. I'm by no means a 'gym rat' but this book is sensible, non-nonsense, and the regimen outlined is certainly repeatable. Topping a golf shot is embarrassing and frustrating. Why is so hard to get the ball airborne on the proper trajectory? After all, you did take the time to go through your set-up routine checking alignment, posture, balance and so on. You placed the club carefully behind the ball. You execute the back swing and then the downswing only to see a shot where the ball barely gets off the ground if at all (hence the term worm burner) rolling to a stop nowhere near your intended landing area. You are most likely left with an impossible second shot where going for the green is nearly out of the question. Now this looks like the best you can do is bogey with double bogey very much in play.
When Dooley Duffer, my golfing buddy, started topping shots a few weeks back he was so embarrassed and discouraged. He began trying to explain it to us as the round progressed. "I can't remember when I have ever topped the ball so much. That is just not like me. I have tried to make adjustments to correct the trajectory but I am still topping the ball." he said.
Well his memory and mine are a bit different. As I recall he goes through spells where he tops the ball resulting in short and extremely low trajectory shots. So I gently reminded him that he had a similar problem this past January (We live in the Charlotte, NC area where year round play is possible). Then while he was commiserating over another topped shot, this one his second to a long par 5, I asked him what he did to correct the issue the last time.
He replied that he had just downloaded the eBook "How to Break 80" by Jack Moorehouse back then. He said that Jack had some good golf tips and drills in that book. So I asked him, "When was the last time you looked it over?" To which he replied, "Based on the way I am playing it has been far too long! Let's go back to my place after the round and look that over. I can't stand to play this poorly any longer."
You see golf, unlike some other sports, is a game of opposites. A golfer must swing easy to hit the ball far, aim to the right to make the ball turn left and then there is the one that was giving Dooley so much trouble that day. You must hit down on the ball to make it go up. That is how the rule of opposites works in golf.
This is counter-intuitive to most of us. We want to swing under the ball and lift it up into the air in an upward motion. That is logical but wrong because it ignores the laws of physics and the design of the face of the golf club. The lofted face is an important part of the club's mechanics; put trust in it and it will do most of the work for you.
Jack Moorehouse explains it better than I can in his book "How to Break 80". If you need sound golf swing instruction to help you develop the proper descending blow and lower your handicap then I would like to point you in the direction of "How to Break 80". Then you too can use it like Dooley did as a future reference to help your swing when things go a bit haywire as they sometimes will.

Let's take a stroll down memory lane, just for a moment. How many of you have ever read Harvey Penick's "The Little Red Book" or how many have ever read Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons The Modern Fundementals of Golf"?
If there ever were golf swing instructions that struck the nail on the head , these two books did the trick. Now, don't get me wrong here, I am not selling these books, but you can still get them if you want at almost any book store.
But for golf swing instruction these gave some insight as to what actually works.
Here is an example of how to get a visual of the proper club head path and almost automatically get on the correct plane.
In Hogan's book he talks about swinging under the plane. The Plane is a sheet of glass with a hole cut into it so that your head can go into the hole. The glass then extends down to the target line, the bottom of the glass sits on the target line while the other end sits on your shoulders with you head through the hole.
This visual gives you the exact plane you should have based on how you are set up, that is your spine angle that will ultimately set the swing plane angle.
Now you must swing under the glass so that you don't break it.
This simple thought and visual coupled with knowing that proper club head path leads to excellent attack angles to the and through the golf ball.
Another excellent thought is the position of the right elbow both on the backswing and on the downswing. On the backswing the right elbow should point exactly down to the ground, this puts the right forearm in a perpendicular position to the ground and at a right angle to your bicep. Your upper arm or bicep should be parallel to the ground.
While this is happening you have to make sure that you are getting a good shoulder turn. It won't help to have the right arm in a perfect position and not have a good shoulder turn.
Now the downswing - start the downswing be literally slamming your right elbow directly into your right hip. Straight down and do this hard and fast. Push with the right hand or pull with the left hand , either will work. While you are slamming your right elbow into your right hip , you will be bumping forward with your left hip. This is a lateral move and is one of Harvey Penicks " Magic Moves" He suggests that you actually start the swing with this bump to the left and that this move will help bring your right elbow into it's proper position.
Try it both ways... see what kind of results you get. And use what works for you.
If you do it right your swing plane and path will improve instantly as you will hit the ball crisply and very very solid.
