Golf Instruction, If You See Someone Teaching This Move, Run!

It was just yesterday that I was at the range with some friends with a video camera taking pics of their swings and generally messing around with trying to get them to quit with the over the top move.

Man, every where I go I see this over the top thing and there just doesn't seem to be an easy fix, even when the fix is easy.

Any way as we were doing our thing, I noticed a family down the range a ways. There were two young boys in their early teens or less. The father, mom was sitting on one of the benches and it appeared that grandfather was there too.

Nice picture. I love it when young kids show an interest. They had decent swings for beginners.

I noticed that Dad was giving advice on their respective swings. And he seemed to know something about it. Not bad, I thought.

Until Dad and grandfather started talking about the takeaway move.

Dad was more than a bit adamant that you should take the club away low and very long. That you should get tremendous separation from your body. And that you have a very late wrist cock of your right hand.

While Grandfather was saying that he thought an early wrist cock and a good shoulder turn was not only easier, but made much more sense to him.

Dad was very very insistent. Grandfather was much more passive. Then the conversation started to include the boys who were hitting balls.

Dad gave them a drill to do.

You put a ball behind your club head on the ground, and on your takeaway you push the ball back with the back of your clubhead as far as you can before you begin to lift the club up into your back swing.

Neither of the boys could hit the ball while doing this.

And it is no wonder. Dad has it wrong big time.

Here is proof.

Mike Wier and Chris Dimarco are only two examples of PGA professionals that use an early wrist cock to start the swing and to get into a great pattern of early angles.

As opposed to very few PGA players who work on a big extension and separation on the move away.

This idea of a big separation and large extension is a formula for developing a poor weight shift and it is a timing nightmare. That's the reason the young boys couldn't hit the ball using this idea.

It often( the move) will pull the golfer out over the outside of his right foot making returning to the left side virtually impossible.

The result, here's a surprise, poor to no weight shift and an over the top move in order to make contact. This of course results in a big left to right ball flight or a SLICE!

It may appear to be a good idea because some PGA players do it. Not as many as there used to be doing, but still some do. It takes an exceptional athlete to accomplish this on a regular basis and the advantage is out weighted by the poor result for most of us.

So all you Dad's out there, here is some great advice.

Listen to Gandpa, he knows best. He knows a lot more than you think. He just doesn't want to be loud about it.

An early establishment of the right wrist angle is a good move. It sets the angles and then you just turn your shoulders.

When you do it right, and every one can, you will hit the ball as if by magic.

The Evolution of Golf Instruction

Nowadays, with the popularity of golf, even through a global recession, you can find a multitude of golf instruction and golf fitness sites on the internet. Golf fitness has come to the fore as PGA Tour pros have evolved into more fit athletes due to the domination of Tiger Woods. Tiger decided early on that he would train for his profession as a world class athlete. As a result, we see far fewer golfers on tour like Tim "Lumpy" Herron and John Daly, and a lot more athletic looking golfers such as Tiger, Adam Scott and Camillo Villegas. If you want to be the best, you have to train like the best!

Golf instruction is now evolving into a profession that involves far more than just giving a quick fix to a golfer, although that is still what some may want. Some instructors are content with providing this type of service, but the top instructors realize that they actually have far more to offer their students than just a tip or two on how to fix their golf swings.

Due to the increased focus by professional golfers on their fitness, the idea of golf fitness has become more credible. Professional golfers now often employ the services of a fitness instructor along with their golf instructor.

However, some fitness instructors erroneously suggest to the average golfer that the secret to longer tee shots and a more consistent golf swing is fitness alone. Golfers who have been frustrated by their own lack of improvement from golf lessons are easy prey for fitness trainers who want to sell them on a few fitness tips to improve their golf games.

Then there are the "golf instructors" online who will sell the average golfer on the idea that there is an "easy" way to swing the golf club, if you only sign up for their newsletter, or purchase their DVDs. However, all you have to do is get an understanding of how hard Tiger Woods works on his game, and his fitness, to realize that improving your golf swing requires hard work! Tiger works on his golf game and fitness 10 to 12 hours per day when he is gearing up for the majors! There are no shortcuts in golf!

The top golf instructors realize that they are in a position to better serve their students by being able to identify ways for a student to improve their golf swing through both golf instruction AND golf fitness training. Just like the evolution of today's PGA Tour stars, the new generation of golf instructors understand that they need to be able offer both services in order to remain competitive in the field.

A golf instructor who practices the "hands on" teaching method of Hank Haney, Tiger Woods' current instructor, can more easily identify the physical issues of a student. A golf instructor who also has significant experience in a variety of physical training methods can then provide suggestions, or even an entire program, to a student on how to achieve their golf swing goals through fitness training.

This type of instructor is extremely valuable to the golf student. In one location, the student can learn all they need to know about the golf swing, and how to address their own physical limitations to accomplish their goals. Compare that to the golf instructors who simply try to make a suggestion as to how to make a quick fix to a golf swing without ever moving the student through the swing. Or, compare the well-rounded instructor to the fitness trainer who really has no experience in golf instruction. They can offer a variety of gimmicky exercises, but they really do not have an understanding of what really drives the golf swing.

Presently, there are not many instructors out there who can offer this well-rounded instruction and training. However, this is the future of golf instruction, so consider seeking out those instructors who are on the cutting edge. Your golf game is sure to benefit!

Definite Beginner Golf Instruction

Definite beginner golf instruction, is the only way any budding golf enthusiast can set standards for themselves if they want to progress in the game. There are a myriad of books and Videos out there, and each one claiming to be the final word on golfing tips. And in reality most of them are excellent, But at the end of the day, it is all down to the individual themselves how good they want to be at the game.

Golf is a wonderful game. It has so much benefits to the player, Male and Female alike. But there is only one problem, you just get out of it what you put in. In other words, what your attitude is to studying the basic components. If you approach the game in a hit and miss fashion, then that will be the result you will reap.

If you are a definite beginner, then golf instruction is the correct way to approach the game. And the least expensive way is to study an E Book method which has been written by a professional who knows his game inside out.

As a beginner there are certain routines you must practice until they become second nature to you. These are, firstly, you must learn the fundamentals of how to set yourself up for a game of golf. This includes studying the drills which are explained in your E Book.

For example. How to measure the exact distance you need to be from the ball before you strike. This is done by selecting the correct tee. How high this tee is, becomes vital for the type of shot you want to take. It is useless if you are teeing off with the wrong tee.

Once you have placed the ball on the tee, make sure it is dead centre of your body. Next place the face of your driver exactly behind the centre of the ball in an upright position and then let it fall back until you can feel comfortable with the distance, but still keeping the club face directly behind the ball. Now put your legs apart each side of the ball. They should be approximately ten to twelve inches each side of the ball. Now you are ready to adapt your grip to what you have been practising. This should be flexible but firm.

Beginner golf instruction is the most important part of any golfers armory. You must set aside times for going to the driving range where you can practice your set up routines, your technique drills, and most importantly your golf swing. There are no quick fixes to becoming a low handicap golfer. There is only practice and focus with a hundred per cent dedication.

It has been said by a wonderful professional, that the only quick way to reduce a handicap is with an eraser. My friend in golf I wish you success and enjoyment in your games of golf. I hope these few tips were helpful to you.

Noel.

Golf is a fantastic game, but it can also be heartbreaking. The simplest of shots can go so far wrong that it can keep your mind occupied for hours after, wondering how you could miss such a simple shot. More times than not this is usually a short range putt, or a simple chip onto a green. Great Golfing Lessons Then there is the joy felt when you hit that sweet part of the ball and your drive sails right down the middle of the fairway. This is golf. What a great game. Learn to love it.

Ernie Els' Guide to Golf Fitness: Take Strokes Off Your Game and Add Yards to Your Drive Overview

Lower Scores and Longer Drives

Let’s face the facts. You need to be in shape to be on your best golf game. Ernie Els’ Guide to Golf Fitness offers a comprehensive and fully illustrated fitness plan for every skill level and body type, because sometimes taking lessons and putting in hours of practice aren’t the only ways to improve your game. Ernie Els’ Guide to Golf Fitness will help you design a program focusing on four key areas:

* Cardiovascular fitness
* Flexibility
* Muscle strength
* Avoiding common golf injuries

This program was designed by Ernie’s personal trainer, David Herman, and together they encourage you to train to prevent injuries and improve your confidence and mental focus, both on and off the course.

Ernie Els' Guide to Golf Fitness: Take Strokes Off Your Game and Add Yards to Your Drive Specifications

One of the biggest mistakes non-golfers and even casual duffers make about the Royal and Ancient game is assuming you don't have to be in shape to play it. The truth is, golf can be an exhausting affair. You can't be a physical wreck and play golf consistently well; as in any sport, the better your condition, the better your chance of success. Two-time U.S. Open champ Ernie Els uses his Guide to Golf Fitness as both a soapbox to stress the benefits of good conditioning and a virtual gym to present a series of general and golf-specific exercises designed to drop your scores as successfully as a good putting tip.

Els developed his program--geared specifically to address a golfer's strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular system--with David Herman, the fitness trainer who helped Els shed the 15 pounds he credits with the resurgence of his game and better health overall. Though many of the exercises--all of which Els himself demonstrates in photographs--require gym equipment, others don't, and while all provide a workout, the program can be easily adjusted in its difficulty and demands to fit any level of desire and ability. "It's important," Els stresses, "to choose an exercise program that you enjoy," that challenges, but doesn't grind you down. There's enough grinding required on the course already. --Jeff Silverman

Golf Swing Instruction

The golf swing can always be improved, it's something which you can always be building upon, whether you're a beginner or not. In this article I just want to give you some really simple yet effective golf swing instruction that you can put into practice very easily for great results.

So let's get started!

The Basics

First of all I would just like to cover what I consider to be the basics of the golf swing and that is swing path and swing plane. This is pretty basic so if you're not a beginner you may want to skip over this, but anyway I just want to give you a quick definition of these terms, and how they relate to one another.

The golf swing to put it simply is a circular shape, your club follows this circular shape as it tracks through the ball. The 'swing path' refers to the circular path which your swing takes, whereas the 'swing plane' refers to the angle of the swing path in relation to the ground.

So let me just explain this in a little more detail just so it's a little clearer, your club travels on a circular swing path however this swing path is not flat, but rather as the club is following this circular swing path it follows an inclined plane.

As you can see these terms are different from one another, but they are very much interrelated as the swing path follows the swing plane. As I said earlier your swing path is not flat instead it follows an inclined plane. So this plane is not horizontal like a merry go round, but it's also not vertical like a Ferris wheel instead it is tilted somewhere in between.

So that's the basics out of the way I hope that's cleared a few things up for you. Don't worry too much about the technicalities of the swing plane, it's going to differ depending on your height and other things anyway.

Now it's time to move onto the more advanced golf swing instruction.

Using Your Body Correctly

Any golfer knows that in order to swing and swing well you must have a really great body rotation. The swing is lead by the body, not by the arms! One of the most common swing mistakes is starting the swing from the arms and letting the arms just become way too overactive through the swing.

If you're starting your swing with your arms that's going to cause all sorts of problems. the most common being a slice. Not only that but a swing that comes from the arms has no power, causes miss-hits and is going to take your club off of its correct path.

In order to achieve a great swing you must begin the rotation with your body, so at address the hips and shoulders should be parallel as you swing to the top of the backswing, the hips will complete their turn before the shoulders.

The shoulders rotate at a right angle to your spine until your back faces the target. On the downswing the hips begin their rotation before the shoulders

When it comes to lower body rotation a problem which a lot of golfers have on the downswing is that when they start the rotation of the hips, they make the mistake of jutting their hips out and slide their lower body out too much.

Now there's a difference between rotating the hips in the downswing and sliding them out, so you really need to ensure that you keep your hips on the correct path. Don't feel yourself pushing your hips out, instead you want to feel more of a turn of the hips back towards the target, whilst maintaining your correct posture.

Finally to ensure that you're really utilizing your lower body through the swing ensure that as you swing back you let the left knee swing in towards the right knee and then on the downswing as you rotate you want the right knee to swing in towards your left leg.

Achieving Solid Ball Contact

Now that you've gotten a good rotation you want to ensure that you make good contact with the ball at impact. Firstly you want to make sure that you're hitting the ball correctly now what I mean by this is that in order to get the ball in the air you must hit down on the ball. You may already know this or you may not, but it's important that you don't try to lift the ball with the club.

Now it's natural to hit up at the ball, after all if something is on the ground and we want it up in the air it seems logical to try and lift it. However you must remember that the golf club has not been designed to get under the ball to lift it.

The lofted clubhead has been designed to contact the ball as it descends in the downswing, the loft of the clubface then gets the ball into the air. So remember to hit down on the ball with every club with the exception of the driver and the putter. The driver requires a more horizontal hit.

Secondly in order to achieve solid ball contact you must ensure that your clubface is in the correct position at the moment of impact. In order to get the correct clubface position at impact the most basic principle is to ensure that you have a good neutral grip. However to really ensure that nice solid contact you need to know how to utilize your left hand.

The left hand is important because it's the hand which steadies the clubface, so in affect it controls the position of the clubface at impact. So practice making swings using just your left hand and don't delay the unhinging of the wrist until the last minute, let it gradually unhinge from the start of the downswing.

If you delay the unhinging then you're going to have to compensate by flicking the wrists into impact this doesn't work and you'll lose a lot of power this way.

So just make some practice swings using only your left arm, this will really help give you an idea of the correct rotation of the left arm through the downswing.

Practice...

Follow this golf swing instruction and put the advice into practice. The get out there on the course and just practice your swing!

Change Your Core Beliefs About Golf Instruction Forever, And You Will Be A Better Player

I believe that there are many ways of getting the exact same results. How about you, do you think that there is but one method that would get great results in your golf swing. And,if so, have you found it yet?

I believe the golf instruction, online golf instruction and one on one golf lessons have done a huge dis-service to those who aspire to play better golf. To be as good as they can be. Not just to get the ball off the ground.

I believe that Golf Instruction has been given with blinders on those who teach. I believe that it is easier for a golf instructor to use a model and then stick to that as their methodology. I also believe that they are dead wrong.

Now before you all start jumping off the mat here, I do not mean to say that all golf instructors are a bunch of dim wits. Not at all. Actually most are pretty darn innovative if you tell them you are serious about your game and want to be as good as you can get.

I had a golf lesson the other day with our club pro, it was an excellent experience. I also went to David Leadbetter's school in Florida for some opinions and evaluation. The two don't compare. Club pro wins that one hands down.

You see it's all about what the model is. Nick Faldo was a great player and had a very good golf swing. His model is used for golf instruction. Do you think you could hit the ball like Nick Faldo? Ever!

So , why bother with golf instruction that is going to use a model that no average Joe could possible emulate?

Here's the deal in my mind. Every one of us has a body makeup that is different from each other. We all have a different physic makeup and we all are driven at different levels.

And there are a number of different approaches in the golf instructional arena that may or may not work for each of us.

I know that it takes more time for golf instruction in order to get to the ambitions of each student. But I am totally convinced that a conversation that runs deeper than, " hello, I'm Paul and I suck at golf"

" please help me to play with that big ole slice"

Golf instruction needs to tighten up some. Let's find out all that we can about the student. So what if it takes a little extra time. It is time well spent. And there is no such thing as just one golf lesson. It is always a series of golf instruction that works best. We all know that, right.

So if you are a student, volunteer as much information to the golf instructor as you can think of that may give them a better insight as to what you are after. If you are one that just wants to get the ball off the ground, fair enough. I am sure that the golf lesson will be fairly short and off you go.

If you are one that wants to play to your max, you need to make sure that the golf instructor know that too.

As for golf instructors, I think the industry would be better off if we all thought that each student wants to be on tour. And your job is to teach them how to hit the ball as best as they can with whatever physical tools they have available to them.

So what got me so fired up about golf instruction?

The short story is that I buy and read every new golf instructional book that I find. There are always a shelf full of the latest magic moves, the new great, until now never discovered, golf instructional secret, that even your grand mother can do.

Or the long lost golf instructional manual just found off the African coast that reveals, for the first time ever, the one move that will make you a PGA/LPA style player in 20 minutes or less.

These are fun to read, and some actually will have some very good information in them, so I buy them.

I am not suggesting, by the way , that you never buy this stuff. Do buy them, they are great entertainment.

But go and see you local PGA professional. Tell them what you want to accomplish and make sure that in your golf swing instruction, that you get " Special Attention" for your golf swing and yours alone.

And one last thought, if you have an 18 handicap player that you like to play with, do not listen to golf instruction from that person.

You would not believe the stuff that I have overheard people telling other people about their golf swings. And what they need to do to fix whatever is going on.

Do not listen to them. But be polite while you are not listening.

Golf instruction is a very personal event. You can learn a lot with some of those books that I buy. You can learn from watching other good players.

And there are some things in the golf swing that you must do. Golf instruction needs to focus on those first.

You must have a good grip and great angles. And believe me, almost every single person can do the things that are on the: "must do list"

If you want to know if there are any real magic moves in the golf swing the answer is yes, there are four. You can learn the first one here for free and take it to the range for a spin, click here: http://www.ebooksbestbuy.com/golf

Golf Grip Instruction

Depending on who or where you go to for golf grip instruction, you're going to get varying advice. The most important thing to remember though is to always know exactly what your strategy is when it comes to golfing before you go and ask for some constructive criticism or instruction. The very same goes for golf grip instruction.

When it comes to golf grip instruction, you really need to know what you want to do on the very first shot of a hole. Do you want to destroy the ball and make it go as long as possible and sacrifice a bit of accuracy or would you much rather hit it at a decent distance but ensure that it will be accurate and land just where you wanted it?

If you want to drive the ball as far as humanly possible, then a strong grip is probably the best instruction you can get. Having a strong golf grip ensures that you can always maintain the head of your club to be square with wherever you want to hit the ball. Along with this, you can then just swing for the fences and as long as you maintain a firm, strong grip then you should hit the ball square and send it flying.

If you'd much rather get a solid distance but ensure more pinpoint accuracy, then it's widely regarded that a firm but not overly tight grip on your club is the way to go. This is to ensure that you can get just enough power so that you'll never lose control of the ball's accuracy, and is a strategy used by many of the better known accurate professional golfers of our day. There are a lot of ways to improve your golf game and this is just one of them.

Without knowing where to begin though - it can be hard to even come up with your own idea. That's why I always suggest you acquire a basic guide to golf so you don't make the same mistakes everyone always did before you. There aren't enough years in life to make all the mistakes on your own - so learn from those of others

The Most Modern Change in Effective Golf Instruction

Golf instruction has largely been a fairly static process over the decades, with little changes here and there over time, but nothing that has taken the game by storm. That is about to change, as a long overdue collaboration between golf instruction experts, biomechanical scientists, and health care professionals is creating a sensible and exciting opportunity for people to both improve their game and maintain a healthy swing for a lifetime. This is truly the most modern change to be found in the game of golf, and it will alter the field of golf instruction forever!

Why The Medical Experts Matter... In Golf

Golfers - even healthy and strong golfers - often suffer from nagging aches and pains due to their time spent on the course. This is, of course, linked to the repetitive stresses involved in swinging a club in an improper manner. Such damage can result from someone simply trying to square up their club face with the ball. The result is that often, they are unable to function normally the next day. Even players whose aches and pains are not debilitating can find them annoying. Many think that these physical problems just part of the game.

They do not have to be! The problem is that the golf swing is all too often based solely on the club and the ball, and rarely does the instructor take the physical body of the golfer into the equation. You see, health care professionals and biomechanical scientists have been working with golf instructors to determine the best swing for maximizing effective muscle use, while also minimizing strain, wear, and tear on the body's joints, muscles and tendons. Now that makes good sense!

Biomechanics Can Improve the Game

Biomechanical experts have insights that dovetail perfectly with the minutiae of the golf swing. These scientists are able to determine precisely how a golfer's joints and muscle groups function optimally to allow an ideal golf swing. They can also tell what elements of a swing are dangerous and put undue strain on musculature and joints that can lead to pain and even serious musculoskeletal injuries over time. Because of this, targeted biomechanical information can be one of your best friends as a golfer, improving every element of your game.

Golf Instruction for the Perfect Connection

It doesn't take much experience to realize, however, that simply going to the doctor or chiropractor to ask for some health and biomechanical input on your golf game is not going to get the job done. Golf instruction needs to incorporate all the parts of the golf swing so they work seamlessly within the parameters of the body. The Perfect Connection Golf Swing program has done all of the research necessary to make that a reality for the modern golfer, providing remarkable consistency and power that can change the whole game. Even better, it also decreases the risks of developing some of those nagging injuries that have been linked to golf - because if the swing is right, and it works with the body, then there's a lot less that can go wrong!

For the most modern tips on golf instruction, golfers are well advised to check out http://perfectconnectiongolfswing.com/ for groundbreaking information on biomechanics and the golf swing.

Beginner Golf Instruction - Top 4 Course Management Tips

There is one thing that all beginner golf players have in common. That is when they play a round of golf they cannot avoid at least one hole that ends in disaster. Often a beginner will be able to play reasonable golf, shooting around two over par every hole, then disaster will strike in the form of an 8 or higher. Typical beginner golf instruction focuses on the swing. The truth is that these costly holes can be avoided with some simple course management strategies. Here are the top 4 course management tips.

1. Don't use a driver on a par 4 or 5 unless you can reach the green in 2 shots. Usually a poor hole starts from a poor tee shot. The driver is the hardest club in the bag to control. The best players in the world only hit the fairway around 70% of the time. What would your average be? If you had to chip the ball out of the trees or even worse: take a penalty then your score increases by at least one anyway. So by hitting driver off the tee you are taking a risk that does not have adequate reward. You will need to play a 3rd shot anyway to reach the green.

2. Tee the ball up on the correct side of the tee. Most beginner golfers simply place their ball in the middle of tee before driving. Did you know that where you place your ball can determine the success of your tee shot? Allow me to explain, if you slice the ball you need to stand on the right side of the tee. Your ball always starts left and moves right. By hitting from the right side of the tee box you effectively give yourself more room to the left to be able to move the ball. The opposite is true for players who hook the ball. You need to stand on the left of the tee to give yourself the best angle.

3. Take 1 more club hitting into the green. This is a good tip for all players. Most players overestimate how far they hit the ball. A majority of shots you hit finish short of the target whether they are struck well or not. By taking an extra club, you can swing easy ensuring better contact and flight control.

4. Use the ground for the short game. Where possible try to use the ground as much as possible for your short game shots. If you can putt from off the green, putt. If you can use a hybrid or wood to hit the ball close to ground, do that. If you can chip and run, do that. Avoid shots that fly a majority of the distance. These shots require perfect strike and flight to be consistent. Most beginners do not have the correct technique to play pitches and lobs very well.
