Golf Chipping Instruction - How to Make a Perfect Chip Shot

The ability to chip well can make all the difference between an average round and a great one. But when should you chip, and what club should you use? You'll need to chip when your ball is near the green, but not on the actual putting surface itself. The object of the chip shot is to get the ball up in the air quickly so that it clears the longer grass surrounding the putting green - called the "apron" - and lands on the short, consistent grass of the green before rolling up to the hole.

To play this shot effectively you should use a lofted club, such as a pitching wedge, that will propel the ball upward. To set up for a chip shot, move your feet closer together than for a normal iron shot. The ball should be farther back in your stance. Grip the club lightly, but with firm wrists. Keep your hands ahead of the ball and the club shaft angled toward the hole for a clean strike. Remember to place most of your weight on your front foot and keep it there throughout the shot.

When you focus on the strike, it's important that you commit to the shot and accelerate through the ball. Keep your head, legs, and upper body still as you swing from the arms and shoulders, not the wrists. Don't worry that the ball won't get airborne - play it correctly and the club-face will propel the ball upward.

The chip is a key shot in any golfer's armory. Not only is it one of the simpler shots to execute, but it's also invaluable for extricating you from any difficult situations you may find yourself in around the green. As long as you remember that the key to successful chipping is accelerating into the impact and letting the club-face lift the ball up and onto the putting surface, you'll keep your scores heading in the right direction.

Some basic rules to follow. Gently lean your upper body toward the target. Keep your head steady and your eyes fixed on the ball until you have hit it. Keep the club-face square to the path of the swing throughout. Keep the club-head close to the ground as it moves back and through.

With an uphill chip, your weight should be on your right side. You may also find it easier to use a club with less loft than a pitching wedge, like a 7-or an 8-iron. The chip from a downhill lie requires that your weight be on your leading side. Be careful not to decelerate through impact, as you may stub the club head into the ground instead of following through correctly.

The bump and run can be used when you have a long chip shot ahead of you. By using a club with a less lofted face than a pitching wedge, an 8-iron, for example, you can lower the trajectory of the ball and allow it to land sooner and run up to the hole. Learning how to chip well will improve not only your golf score but your enjoyment of the game so do put these tips into practice as soon as you can!

Nine Bad Shots of Golf Review

My faded (1961) copy of Jim Dante's 1947 "The Nine Bad Shots of Golf and What to Do About Them" is a gem! It's still available in reprints (1990). The scope is exactly what all beginning and most experienced golfers need and want: How to stop hooking, slicing, topping, pushing, pulling, smothering, shanking, skying, and sclaffing. The language is wonderfully straightforward. To hit a low ball, Dante says use one more (lower-faced) club, put nearly all your weight on the left foot, and dont't pivot. "These three things," Dante says, "are virtually all you can do." What if the green can't be approached by a run-up? Dante: "Well, that's just too bad."

Tiger's New Swing: An Analysis of Tiger Woods' New Swing Technique Review

I have had trouble with a fade on the follow through, especially with the driver. This is because while my backswing is outside, my downswing is also out to in coming across the ball, causing a the fade. The key is to have one back swing plane and one downswing plane. I'm working on it. The "new swing" is going to help me going forward Ron Goerler

Tiger's New Swing: An Analysis of Tiger Woods' New Swing Technique Overview

Tiger Woods, the world's greatest golfer, has switched teachers and everybody is talking about his new swing. There have been numerous changes to his technique since renowned author and golf instructor John Andrisani's bestselling The Tiger Woods Way hit the shelves in 1997. And the overall improvement in Woods' game has everyone asking the same question: what is he doing differently since switching to teaching guru Hank Haney and how can I use these lessons to improve my own game?

Drawing from interviews with golf instructors familiar with Tiger's swing, professional golfers who have played with Tiger, television golf analysts, and his own independent study and analysis of Tiger's game, Andrisani offers detailed, easy-to-follow instructions on Woods' new swing in short, simple chapters for the first time anywhere. Not a useful book - E. Zapata - California, USA
Two stars for the pictures but even the first book had better pictures
and outlines.

After reading the First Book which to me made some sense, and was more clear in the steps, excercises and even the pictures, that made me look for the second book. It turns out that the first book made an idol out of Butch Harmon, Tiger's former coach at the time. Well, the second book it seems like it was written on a weekend, less focused, and totally opposing the benefits that the previous book described. It turns that the
so great wide, Closed stance, with a flat swing turned into a narrower, open stance (to promote fade) and upright swing.

Page 111, step 4 of the description of Tiger's finish position (ideal) mentions:

"4. Your hands positioned level with the back of your neck and behind your *right* ear." Can someone explain me that level of flexibility for a right handed player to end up with his hands positioned behind the *right* ear? Of course, at the finish your hands are behind the entire
head (nose, eyes, eyelashes). Andrisani might have wanted to mention
behind the *LEFT* ear?

Anyways, on this book, with all the respect to both Haney and Harmon which are excellent proven instructors, the best in the world - but it seems like Harmon would not have agreed what was published since I am sure
Andrisani missinterpreted Harmon's instruction, turning into a
day/night contrast between Harmon and Haney (the now idol of this
book).

At least it should have contrasted the pictures of the swings (side by side) to illustrate differences, angles, etc., since this second book is more into confusing wording.

Remember - from the Back Cover. "This book is an independent analysis
of Tiger Wood's new swing by John Andrisani...bluff bluff... The author
did not seek the participation of Tiger Woods in the preparation of this
book, and Tiger Woods has not authorized or endorsed it."

I stuck to the first book and am driving very straight, controlled draw
long drives, since even after reading the second book, the first one made
more sense, and was better to remember.

Bad beyond belief - revbd - Ireland
Andrisani brings new depth of meaning to 'superficial' in his latest 'instant' book.
Content is, as with Andrisani's 'Hogan' book, misleading and wrong. For example Andrisani characterises Woods' old swing as 'rounded' and his new swing as 'upright' whereas, as everyone with the slightest interest in this subject knows, it is precisely the opposite that is the case. How do books this bad get published?
Rubbish. Avoid.

tiger's new...i mean old swing - Michael Wilson - London, UK
I completely agree with the previous reviewers. This is complete nonsense.Haney is very much closer to the Jim Hardy school of thought(one plane flat) than Butch Harmon is.In fact Tiger's woes with the driver have continued and it's interesting to note that for the US PGA he seemed to be back to a slightly steeper plane which,as we all know,he went on to win. This book makes no sense to me at all.

A Weekend of Golf

golf n. sports

A game played on an outdoor course with a series of 9 or 18 holes spaced far apart, the object being to propel a small ball with the use of various clubs into each hole with as few strokes as possible.

This definition cannot begin to define the greatest sport ever invented.

There is no best time to play a round or more of this game. You may want to play early in the morning with the dew still sparkling, on the greenest grass and the bluest skies above. Or play later in the day after work, with the shadows starting to form and the heat of the day waning.

If you don't have a good round you can't wait to play again because you know you can do better. By the same token, if you have a great round you can't wait to go out and do it again. There are but a few experiences as pleasurable as golf.

We used to go to Angola IN and Coldwater MI for a weekend of golf. There are 3 or 4 courses in the area and especially the 9 hole course on Iyopawa Island near Coldwater. A small course but fun and challenging. We were there one day when sewer pipes were being installed around the island. There are quite a few vacation homes on the island. Near the golf course were some of these large pipes awaiting installation. A golfer (left-handed) teed off the first tee and popped the tee shot into one of the sewer pipes. You could hear it "whanging" around there before it shot out straight across the middle of the golf course. My companion kept saying "don't laugh! don't laugh!"

We would play golf morning and afternoon, go to Win Shuler's restaurant in Coldwater for dinner and play again the next day. When we returned home, I swore I wouldn't play again for at least a week. But the next day, the clubs were in the car and I would play 9 holes after work.

I started playing golf rather later in life than most people and discovered a talent for the game. It is the only thing I have ever wanted to teach.

See and Feel the Inside, Move the Outside, Expanded 2nd Edition Review

A must read for every serious golfer who wants a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of the golf swing. It's one of the best books I've read on the golf swing and truly focuses on the motions and actions present in all sound golf swings. Explanations and illustrations are easy to understand. He quotes Hogan and Jones throughout. My index was 6 before reading the book and I anticipate it dropping with the suggestions from Hebron. I'm very excited with the consistency I'm seeing with my ball trajectory...straight to a soft draw with all clubs as well as an increase in distance. I'm reading it a second time!

Revision is well organized with 49 pages of photos and graphics. Hebron updates his orginal thoughts to his current thinking throughout this well done book. Word has it all of his books are being revised and also made into ebooks.

not bad - Todd Miller - New York
I have read several of M. Hebron's books and have watched his videos. This is by far his best book. Don't waste your time with his other books. They all just repeat what he says over and over. And he offers really irrelevant facts about golf, the golf swing, and the life of Egyptians 2500 years ago (really). Talk about analysis paralysis! This is a top 50 golf instructor as ranked by Golf Magazine. He is considered just one level below Leadbetter, Flick, Harmon etc. But some fo the other 2nd-tier Top-50 instructors have big-name students, Hebron has nobody. I believe it's because top students know that they can get the same or better instruction elsewhere. Stick with the main instructors. Other than that, there are some great general golf and golf swing instructional books out there. If you want to get technical, the way Hebron attempts to, then you may want to read Searching for the Perfect Swing or Systematic Golf, instead.

Best golf instruction book I've read. - -

How To Keep A Golf Scorecard

Sometimes as you are beginning to play the game of golf, keeping score for a round may seem daunting at first. After reading this article, you should find scoring for golf can be easy. Many players do not keep score when they first start because they are already nervous and frustrated by their golf swing. Remember no matter what skill level you are at, having fun is the real name of the game.

We will begin with explaining the scorecard. Obviously, not all scorecards are alike. However, they all have some basic components. To start with, every scorecard has a wide column for the names of the players. This is purely for your reference. The order the names (or nicknames) appear on the card does not matter. Although golf is typically played in foursomes, you may find more than four spaces available for names. Sometimes, a scorecard will have par (we will discuss later) as a colored bar running across the card and this will allow for you to show teams more easily if needed.

Next, par on the scorecard refers to the expected amount of strokes that it may take to complete the hole for a scratch golfer. With exceptions to the rule, par is determined by distance. Par is always determined by assuming it would take two strokes once on the putting surface in regulation. For example a hole that is a "Par 5" should take 3 strokes to reach the green in regulation and two more strokes to complete. If you can reach a par five in two shots and two putts that would be a four or one under par or also known as a birdie. Conversely, if it takes you four strokes to reach the green on a par five and two putts then you would have made a six or be one over par also known as a bogey for that hole. After the round you may hear someone refer to their round as ten over. This means they were ten over par. On a course with a par of 72, they would have been telling you that they had shot 82 that day.

Sometimes players will use a handicap for scoring. The handicap is the amount of strokes that can be subtracted from a player's actual score to produce a net score. If your handicap is a 20 for the course you are playing that day and you shoot a score of 85 or thirteen over, 85 would be your .gross score. and 65 or seven under would be your .net score.. This is why sometimes you will see two tournament scores posted by a name at your local club. One is a gross score and the other is a net score.

You will also find a column to record a score for each hole played. Each time you make an attempt to hit the ball it will count as one stroke. The total strokes for each hole are added up and the total is entered on the scorecard. The first nine holes that you play are referred to as the out nine and the last nine holes are referred to as the in nine. Old links golf courses went straight out for nine holes and then turned and came straight back in. Once you have completed eighteen holes you will add you r scores form the front and back nines for your total score.

To properly complete a scorecard, you will sign the card as well. All scorecards have a place to sign as the scorekeeper or to attest the scorecard as well as to provide the date. This will become more important to you as you begin to play tournament golf. Your club may require this for the scorecard to be valid for handicap purposes as well. Check with your local club to make sure.

Beginner Golf Instruction - How a Beginner Can Improve at Golf in Just a Day!

It is essential that anyone who wants to start playing golf focuses his or her efforts on beginner golf instruction in order to make sure not to over complicate things in the beginning. What are some tips that you need to learn in order to start playing better golf if you are just a beginner? Here I am going to share with you three tips that you can use in order to get better at golf fast and amaze your friends at how fast you have become a good golfer.

1. First and foremost you need to realize that your putting and short game is going to be essential in you shooting better golf scores. Even if you are are a terrible ball striker you can shoot decent scores by improving your putting and chipping. Do some drills where you take 5 balls and try to chip all of them within a 4 foot circle. After you have done that try to make all of the putts. Do this over and over again from a variety of different spots around the green in order to improve your golf game.

2. While chipping and putting is one of the fastest ways to improve your game, the most fun part is probably learning to hit your driver further. The way to do this is to concentrate on solid contact and do not try to kill every shot. Make sure that you start your downswing by turning your hips to the left to start your down swing which will get your swing on the right path and improve your driving.

3. Any beginner golf instruction should focus on you simplifying your golf swing in order to make sure not to over complicate the process. This is a common problem that most golfers just starting out have, which is why it is so essential when seeking beginner golf instruction that you find a complete, yet simple way to swing the golf club effectively and improve your game.

9 Basic Golf Rules For Beginners

Elementary rules of golf are not that hard to master, but they may seem out of reach if the game is completely new to you. Unlike other sports, golf does have some unsaid rules that, with their absence may not disqualify you, but practicing them makes you at ease on the course and with other players as well. The most basic rules concern themselves with behavior and conduct, and also with taking care of the course. This article will help any player feel more comfortable on the course, be it a player who needs to remind himself of these basic rules, or may be a player completely new to the game as well.

1. One round of the game consists of 18 holes that you need to finish within four hours
2. You are permitted to carry up to fourteen golf clubs in your kit bag. Carrying more may result in penalty.
3. Basic golf manners require that you allow the person before you to make a hit. You need to keep this in mind throughout the game all over the course. The player who is allowed to make the first hit is he who scored lowest on the previous hole.
4. Safety is always important. Before making your swing, make sure no one is standing right beside you, or in the area you are aiming at. A golf ball is very hard and could cause serious injury.

If you are a beginner to the game you need to be aware that you need to stay brisk and attentive on the course. You need to do your best to avoid slow play, which is a violation of the rules. Try these tips -

5. Before you begin the round, make sure you have all the required equipment in your golf bag. You will not have time to return for another club during play.
6. Do not try and practice on the course itself. The practice area is meant for this, or you could practice elsewhere.
7. Do not waste more than a few minutes looking for a mishit ball, its just not worth the time.
8. Do keep track of the pace of the golf players before and after you. If the group behind you is much faster than you, you could save them some frustration by letting them get ahead.
9. After you have done your putting, move out of the green immediately. This is not the area where you should hang around and look up the scores.

Following some of these basic rules and etiquette will not only improve your game, but will avoid frustrations. After all, you do need to feel welcome on a golf course, and not a pain in the wrong place.

Golf and Your Health

If you are concerned about your health and fitness, some studies have shown that playing golf can easily be a very good workout. Simply by walking instead of riding in a cart, especially carrying your own clubs, you can make your 18 holes equal a 45-minute fitness class. According to cardiologist Edward Palank, walking while you golf can even decrease your cholesterol.

During a typical game of golf, you can expect to walk about 5 miles or more. This can, of course, promote cardiovascular fitness and burn about 300 calories, lowering your cholesterol and possibly speeding up your metabolism which makes weight loss easier. By carrying your clubs, you can also turn your golf game into a weight bearing exercise, which builds muscle as well as prevents bone degeneration and osteoporosis.

Through your golf swing you can exercise muscles that don't ordinarily get any attention. Your golf swing can not only impress your co-workers, business partners and friends, it can also build your strength, increase your flexibility and improve your agility and coordination.

In additional to such physical health benefits, golfing can reportedly have tangible effects on your mental and emotional health. By being outside in the sun, you can absorb Vitamin D, boosting your mood and encouraging psychological well-being.

It's also more difficult to play golf well if you are stressed and unable to concentrate, in order to focus on the game you must relax. Accomplishing this relaxation and focus can balance and improve your state of mind as well as keeping you sharp and aware. Playing golf requires an ability to capitalize on opportunities and minimize the intensity of your mistakes, a useful skill in business, in life, and also a valuable mental exercise for people of all ages.

With regular exercise, studies show you can fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly at night, increasing the quality of your rest. The benefits of a good nights sleep are numerous, I'm sure everyone can agree that you feel better overall after a healthy rest! Your muscles repair themselves from the damage of your daily activity while you sleep, but that is not all. Sleep also affects how quickly you can heal, as well as increasing your metabolism while improving your immune system and memory processing.

Golf is largely a social sport; this in itself facilitates some health benefits. When we interact with people, especially new friends, endorphin production is increased causing you to feel better and creating a more positive outlook overall!

If you're not already a golfer, isn't now a good time to start? And if you play regularly, isn't it time you use your own two feet and turn your game into a leisurely workout? If you have any personal experience with the positive health benefits of golfing, we urge you to share it with our online community!

Golf Short Game Instruction - See Your Option Here

Golf Short Game Instruction is a great way to improve your skills from 100 yards and closer. There are so many different methods of training that it can be hard to choose what will suit your needs best. Some people may decide to take personal lessons, others may read up on the subject, and others may buy training equipment that is specific to the area they want to work on.

When choosing which golf short game instruction method you should use, you will first need to ask yourself what exactly are you trying to accomplish. If you are trying to become a better putter, you may find that loads of practice and reading up on some free tips would be the prudent course of action. Paying for golf short game instruction to try and help remedy that problem could become pricey, and they will most likely show you what you can learn for free, and tell you that practice is the key to developing a solid putting stroke.

Here are some golf short game instruction and training resources;

-Private lessons

-Reading Books

-Buying training aids, such as chipping rings, putting greens etc.

-Researching the subject

-Practice

-More practice

From experience, I can tell you that private lessons are very expensive. Another problem with them is that the lesson concludes when the time is up, not when the job is done. Reading books is a viable and cheaper option. Purchasing training aids is a great way to get solid golf short game instruction. They offer great feedback, and keep your cost to a minimum. Of course, practice, practice, and more practice. In golf, practice makes perfect.

Finding the best training resource is only the first step. It is what you do with the information that will determine just how it translates on the course. I have found that there is plenty of great information on the web to learn the skills you need to make major improvements. I recommend buying training aids and other golf short game instruction books/dvds because they will provide you with more bang for your buck.

Golf Instruction Grip Tips

Golf grip is one of the most important features that will affect, the performance of the individual on the greens. It is advisable to improve the grip while learning to play golf, so that a person can be effective on the greens. It is seen that the grip of most professional golfers is quite similar.

It is important to find the best hand position and grip that suits the player. The correct hold comes only with experience and it is important that the person?s hold is consistent. Once a good grip is established, it is advisable to stick with it by adequate practice. It is important to practice gripping the golf club in a similar manner every time.

There are many ways to hold or grip a golf club. Usually a player uses two, three, or more different grip methods per round. The three most common grips are the ten-finger grip, the overlapping grip and the interlocking grip. It is important to determine the best grip for an individual. There are no restrictions on the type of grips, thus a player can experiment till the right grip is established.

The ten-finger grip is felt to be the easiest and oldest of the grips and therefore used mostly by novice players. It is more like a baseball grip. In this, the right-hand forefinger and the left-hand pinky, butt up to each other on the club. Even senior players or players with large hands feel most comfortable with the ten finger grip.

The Vardon grip, or the overlapping grip, is the most common and popular way to hold a club presently. In this method, the little finger of the right hand overlaps the forefinger of the left hand. Thus the left-hand pinky covers or wraps the right-hand forefinger.

Many great players such as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Kite, and Tiger Wood have the interlocking grip, which is the least common of grips. In this method, the left-hand pinky slips between forefinger and middle finger on the right hand and thus the left pinky and the right forefinger interlock.

How to Play Better Golf? - Looks Like You'll Have to Learn the Draw

In golf (depending on your skill level) you will from time to time hit a bad shot, even if your name is Tiger Woods you will hit the odd stinker.

This gives us a problem, we often find ourselves in areas of the course where you did not want to be, and so we need to play a different kind of shot. to get out of trouble.
So, we have to learn how to play better golf. One of the most useful shots you can have in your armoury is "the draw". A draw is when you need a shot which starts right of target and curves left in the air back to the target.

To successfully hit a draw:

1) Aim your club face along the target line with your shoulders pointing right of the target in a closed position, parallel with your intended line of start.

2) From this set up if you make your normal swing along your shoulder line your club face will be slightly closed at impact.

3) This causes a soft draw, which curves from right to left back onto the target line.

4) The finish should show a fully released club head with it pointing to the left of the target.

We should just consider that in any round of golf you probably only hit five or six irons in regulation. The majority will be something other than you normally play. Golf courses are made to make our golfing lives a little more difficult than they need to be and they intend to take us away from our norm, to give us the challenge of how to play better golf.

Fairway bunkers, overhanging trees, mounds and hollows are there to be overcome, if you can adapt your game to change the spin and shape of your golf shot you are demonstrating the art of golf and that is the great pleasure of the game.

Golf Robot Technology Intro

This is an actual robot that can completely and totally perfectly reproduce any full golf swing or chipping regardless if its right or left handed! The single main purpose of this robot is so that a person can actually feel the swing the golf pro wants them to reproduce. Although you could have fun and feel pretty close to what Tiger or a Furyk swing feels like it would quite honestly be totally useless because you are not in their condition, you dont have their flexibility, speed, co-ordination etc. you are not them. The golf robots real intention is that a trained golf pro can have you FEEL exactly what they want you to do. Telling you, talking to you, showing you is NOT THE SAME AS FEELING IT. The swing assist golf robot gets you to the AH-HA moment sooner than any other technology in existence. And of course it has a lot of golf pros against it because for many its too expensive, its too intimidating and too many small minded pros might think it replaces them when in actual fact is does just the opposite, it puts them in demand because they can accomplish what most pros cant and do it faster and in less lessons. For the first time ever, you can have a way to FEEL what you are supposed to do. Ideally your pro would create the perfect swing for your body and ability in order for YOU to get the best possible contact with the golf ball and then you would feel that swing 4 or 5 times, then step back and try to replicate it via shadow swinging. Then once again step forward ...

Nick Faldo Analyzing Tiger Woods' Swing at the Memorial

It seems like every time Tiger hits a bad shot someone is there to critique his action. At the Memorial it was Nick Faldo enlightening viewers to his ideas on the causes of Tiger's bad shots. There is certainly nothing wrong with offering an opinion, but it would be nice if it was coherent and based on something other than conventional golf instruction BS, especially from someone with Faldo's pedigree.

Golf Club, Do You Know Which One is Most Important?

What is the most important Golf Club in your bag? What is the most important Golf Club in "My" bag? Ask ten different people and get ten different answers. The driver, wedge, putter, 9 iron, different strokes for different folks.

If you were to ask my opinion, it would be "whatever club you are reaching for in any given circumstance". Suppose you believe, or have been told, that the most important golf club in your bag is your driver. That driver is no good to you 100 yards out from the green, and is just about useless on a par 3 executive course. What about that new putter? Is that any good to you in the tee box, and besides, what good is it to 2 putt on a par 5 when it takes you 7 to get there.

The bottom line is. Every tee box is different, every fairway is different, and every sand trap, fringe, rough, and green is different. You might play the same course week after week and the par 5 third is different every time to step into the tee box. It might be the tee location; it could be the pin placement. It could be other factors like wind, rain, sun, clouds, or fog. Everything changes day-to-day, hour-to-hour. It is not always easy. What club should I use? What is the most important club to me, right now?

Who cares what the most important golf club in the bag is. Lets Play. Remember that par 5 third I just told you about. It's Monday, the sun is shining, no wind, fairway is dry and short, time to "let the BIG DOG eat". Your drive is 250 yards plus another 30 roll...nice. Next a 5 iron brings you in close, you chip on and 2 putt for par. What was your most important golf club? They all seem to be pretty important to me. Now it is 3 days later, Thursday, same course, same hole.... or is it? It rained the night before, the fairway was not mowed, and it is cloudy with a 15 mph right to left wind. What is your most important golf club? You don't know. You play the same clubs and score a 9 or 10 instead of par. Why??

The answer is really quite simple. Go to any driving range and watch people hit balls, I would bet that 95% of the people at the range use their driver to hit most, if not all, of their shots. Then watch people when they get ready for a round of golf, they spend their time on the putting green while they wait to tee off. You might have noticed that there are about 12 other golf clubs in your bag.

Final analysis. Get a lesson, learn to swing properly, and use and get to know every golf club in your bag. They are all the most important golf club in your bag.

Fix the Yips Forever: The First and Only Guide You Need to Solve the Game's Worst Curse Review

The review by Fernando L. Sosa "periososa" was both unfair and inaccurate. This book is both interesting and helpful. It begins with a history and explanation of the yips and then differentiates between ordinary mechanical setup problems and true nervous yips. This is the only book to my knowledge that goes beyond a simple paragraph or page explanation in other books. I started golf forty years ago with horrible driver yips which took me thirty years to manage. Then, I developed chipping and putting yips. This book has been a great help identifying and offering typical approaches to manage your yips. I switched to a belly putter and a cross-handed grip and now I only have a rare twitch at contact with the ball that drives the ball to the left. I have a feeling that the critical reviewer wanted a simple, one paragraph, permanent solution to his problem. As sport psychologists and philosophers suggest, the answer lies within you; you already have the cure. Hank Haney gives you the insight and techniques to help you help yourself.

Fix the Yips Forever: The First and Only Guide You Need to Solve the Game's Worst Curse Overview

Let the teacher who works with Tiger Woods, the world’s best player, help you cure the yips—the frustrating problem that can cause even the greatest players to miss short putts, jab chip shots over the green, or miss fairways by eighty yards off the tee.

"The yips can make you feel like you want to quit golf and take up fishing full time. I know. I’ve been there. But Hank’s experience and sensitivity to the problem make him unique in the world of golf instructors. If you have the yips, you couldn’t be in any better hands than Hank Haney’s."
—Mark O’Meara, from the Foreword to Fix the Yips Forever

Most golfers think of the "yips" as a psychological affliction, a confidence problem that causes them to lose control of their game because of a split-second glitch. But scientists are now starting to unlock the true root of the problem: focal dystonia, a motor-neural malfunction that causes a player’s brain to distort the message being sent to the muscles. Acclaimed golf instructor Hank Haney used these discoveries to overcome his twenty-year battle with the yips, and now he shares his breakthrough regimen that can "rewire" any golfer who struggles with the yips.

Showcasing dozens of practical, hands-on techniques for eliminating the yips from putting, chipping, and the full swing, Fix the Yips Forever delivers the brand of prescriptive advice and drills that have made Haney one of the most sought after golf instructors in the world. This groundbreaking handbook features more than 100 black-and-white photographs, including reproductions of diagnostic screens and Haney’s ultrasound "yips measurement System" for hands-on yip-free training. If you can’t make it to Haney’s Golf Ranch for a personal diagnosis, Fix the Yips Forever is the next best thing.

Yips be gone! - Eagle711 - South Pasadena, California
I struggled for two years with the worst case of the putting yips. Hank has two systems. Fix it mentally or fix it physically. By drastically changing my grip and taking my right hand out of the putt I am no longer yipping. It is a great book with lots of ideas and empathy for the dreaded yip disease that can be cured.

Fixing the yips forever - Ron M - Atlanta,GA
Great book. I got a lot out of it and have improved my chipping quite a bit based on some of the info and pratise ideas from the book.

Solid instructional book on the golf game - Eagle Vision - Southeastern United States
Hank Haney coached Tiger Woods in 2008. His credentials are extensive. When an expert writes about a common anomaly as the Yips, one should really listen to him.

Haney covers everything from the full swing, short game (chips) and putting yips. He shows methods of how to swing the club and how to cope with the yips. I read this book primarily for information, as a beginner and a golf scholar (having already read dozens of golf books). He advocates the arc type of putting stroke over the straight back-straight through stroke.

The text is easy to follow and the author cites clinical research behind the phenomenon of the yips. The book is well illustrated with sharp full color photographs.

Overall, Haney's advice is solid. I highly recommend this book (even if you don't have the yips).

A must read! - Brian D. Hamilton - Cape Cod, MA
Must read this book if you are afflicted with the putting, chipping or full swing yips. Many, many good tips on how to minimize and perhaps overcome this dreaded "disease".

Hank Haney's Essentials of the Swing: A 7-Point Plan for Building a Better Swing and Shaping Your Shots Review

An excellent, easy to follow book about the fundamentals of the golf swing. Haney takes you step by step from the grip and alignment to the backswing and follow through. He explains things without using a lot of technical jargon although I'm still not sure what he means by "milking the club". Plenty of pictures to accompany the text helps make things clearer. Haney does a good job of explaining the "why" as well as the "how" when he discusses grip, alignment, posture etc which helps to make things stick. I'm still working on the grip he recommended as well as making my swing plane more shallow.

Backyard Mini Golf Course - Excellent Way To Practice Putting At Home

No doubt it is entertaining for everyone involved when you take the family on a visit to the golf course. But did you know you could turn your own back yard into a mini golf course? Kids enjoy making obstacles in your mini course by rummaging around the attic for odds and ends that could go there. Some obstacles could be made out of cardboard as well, and you could use old cardboard boxes as material for these. Of course we don?t mean to compare this mini golf course to the real thing, but as far as kids are concerned they would have a lot of fun with inexpensive clubs, maybe the plastic variety available in toy stores.

It doesn't take much to convert a yard into a miniature golf course. Miniature golf is usually played on level ground, and your back yard is probably already leveled. On the other hand, a slight hillock wouldn't hurt, so if you have one already in your yard do leave it as it is. Every little kid loves to play in the dirt, and your children may be amazed that you are actually asking them to dig holes in the ground, but that?s exactly what our next step would be. Dig in some small flower pots up to the brim, right into the ground. These would serve as the holes, so make sure they aren't too big. Once these are in place, you need to make the flags. Use a little creativity by making flags out of felt cloth or even plastic sheets; just use whatever is easy to get your hands on. You could attach the flags to sticks to make them stand in the ground.

Next comes the challenge of making hurdles in your golf course. You could make the game as easy as you wish, and maybe as hard as you'd like as well. An old pipe would do just fine for a tunnel, while wood could serve as a bridge. Maybe you could make a sand trap - just get a bag of sand and empty an ample amount for the sand trap. Saw dust would work equally well, but tends to disappear rather quickly. You could create water areas simply by digging in water containers or buckets into the ground, just as you have already dug in the flower pots as holes. Make sure you use containers that do not leak. The list is endless - you could use anything lying around the house to make your golf course really challenging and interesting.

To make it seem more real, you could print out a few score sheets on a PC, and you are ready to go. Kids enjoy these miniature golf courses any time.

Golf: The Best Short Game Instruction Book Ever! (Golf Magazine) Review

My wife bought this book for me for Valentine's Day . . . . while we were in the bookstore and I handed it to her saying 'buy this for me for Valentine's Day'

It's full of great tips, suggestions, pictures, easy to understand suggestions.

The BEST part of this book is that I finally know what I need to do when I'm in certain short game situations. What club do I use/where does the ball go/what kind of swing do I need when:

I'm 30 yards out in the rough? Bunker with a high wall? Just off the green on hardpan? 20 yards out on the fairway with a close cut pin? A far away cut pin?

This book answers them all. I even made up a cheat sheet and will be bringing it with me the next time I get out so I know what to do from just about any situation 60 yards and in.

Great stuff. Buy it and you won't be disappointed.

The title of this book is definitely wrong. It is not in the top 5 or 10 best short game books (look for Dev Pelz' Short Game Bible or Phil Mickelson's book if you want the best. It's more geared for a beginner golfer and can be useful for someone who is new to the game. The DVD is pretty useless too, with 10 small 2-3 minute snipets of lessons.

PurePoint Golf Instruction Golf Backswing and Bending the Knee Advice

I'll give you some great golf backswing advice that is happening, so you have a. There are two mistakes you can make in the backswing. And then they tell you to do it the right way.

The first error is when the shoulder is not moving and not to turn back, then run into your arms and shoulders, leans into the air. And if you do this, is the golf swing and vertical gaze, and you hit the ground and you hit a lot of shotsoff to the right.

On the other hand, some of you think so much of turning that you turn your right shoulder and your hips together, and the golf club gets way around inside.

So, for those of you that do this, you'll wind up hitting a lot of tops because the club won't swing back down.

So, let me give you some golf backswing advice. This is the correct way. After you've addressed the golf ball, the right shoulder starts turning backwards. And that way, this enables the golf club to swing up on the correct plane.

So, if you can move your shoulder out of the way and don't turn your bottom much, the golf club will move up on plane as you turn away from the golf ball.

Now, I'm going to tell you the role that the knees play during the entire golf swing. The correct posture in golf, in order to improve your golf swing, is that you bend at your hips, over the bones that are on both sides of your hips.

We don't sit in this sport. We have our knees slightly flexed, and then we bend from the hips.

In the golf swing, the knees never ever get straight in the backswing. They stay flexed the entire way.

The game of golf starts and ends right here. Good players play the sport from inside the right knee as they turn. It doesn't go out and it doesn't go straight. But it stays where it was at the beginning of the backswing, so as we start back the knees don't move.

Now, the downswing: As the arms start to unwind the knees don't move at all. The centrifugal force, the speed of the golf club swings into the ground.

As the club passes you and your left hip starts to move out of the way, then, and only then, does the right knee start to get straighter in the downswing after impact.

And the entire time, make sure that you don't lock your left knee in the downswing. Keep it slightly flexed as you swing through. You don't have to come all the way up and straighten it up.

I think that that might help you improve your golf swing. Think about this tip a couple of times and make sure that this is what you're thinking of when you swing the golf club, in relation to your knees.

And thanks.

The Nicklaus Way: An Analysis of the Unique Techniques and Strategies of Golf's Leading Major Championship Winner Review

The Nicklaus Way: An Analysis of the Unique Techniques and Strategies of Golf's Leading Major Championship Winner Overview

Jack Nicklaus set a record for most career victories in major championships, capturing a total of eighteen between 1962 and 1986, including six Masters wins. In 1988 Golf Magazine named the "Golden Bear" Golfer of the Century, recognizing his exceptional swing and shot-making game, his strength as a golf ambassador, and his contributions to the game, including ushering in power-hitting.

In The Nicklaus Way, acclaimed golf writer John Andrisani analyzes how Nicklaus created such a powerful swing and developed near perfect shot selection. Andrisani also reveals the secrets to Nicklaus's mental and course-management games, and shows golfers how to prepare thoroughly for a round of golf -- Nicklaus style.

What makes this book unique is that Andrisani goes far beyond the fundamentals of the setup and swing that Nicklaus learned from teacher Jack Grout and that enabled him to win so many major championships. Taking the instructional analysis process to the next level, Andrisani identifies for the first time subtle technical points of Nicklaus's swing that are not talked about in any of his instructional books or videos, as well as some new swing fundamentals Nicklaus learned from other top teachers such as Rick Smith.

In The Nicklaus Way, Andrisani also looks at Nicklaus's tee-to-green game, sharing with golfers the ins and outs of this great golfer's uncanny shot-making game. The instruction is easy to follow, so golfers will have no excuse for not being able to hit everything from a power fade drive to a biting short iron to a long putt.

How to Improve Your Golf Swing - Neutralise Your Golf Grip

One way to improve your golf swing is to neutralise your golf grip. Firstly you will only hook the golf ball if you swing the club face closed at impact. The majority of golfers that hook the ball display a 'strong grip', where the hands are too far to the right of the handle.

Golfers will swing the club too much from the inside of the line, with the hands, arms and body struggling to hold the club face open at impact. Weakening the grip will help stop the club face closing on impact.

Secondly, a common fault with a lot of golfers is the stance. The width of stance will vary slightly according to the golf club you are using. As a general guideline, I recommend that the stance for the 5-iron should correspond to the width of your shoulders. Check your stance regularly when you practise. A wide stance will give you good stability but less mobility. A narrow stance will give you more mobility but less stability.

Thirdly, getting your posture right will make playing the game easier. The reason for this is that your posture controls the balance points in your swing, and good balance is key in helping you develop your game. Start by placing your thumbs on your hip joints, this is where you bend from the hip joint. From there lean forward putting your weight on the front of your feet. Finally flex your knees, feeling the pressure on your thighs. Hope this helps, happy golfing.

Golf Drivers Buying Guide

Find The Perfect Driver For Your Game
When it comes to choosing a golf driver there's so much more to think about than the latest clubhead design - 'hot' faces and on-the-legal-limit head sizes; multi-material heads and moveable weights. Less glamorous aspects such as getting the right loft, shaft flex and grip are just as important in matching a driver to your game - enabling you to gain extra yards off the tee, without sacrificing accuracy.

Of course, much of the same technology applies to fairway woods, too. So if you prefer using woods to irons, look out for the same features that you need in your driver - 3, 5 and 7 woods being the most common.

Clubhead Design
The use of titanium has spawned lighter, much larger, more forgiving clubheads. A larger head has a bigger sweetspot, improving your chance of making good contact with the ball. Club faces have also been made thinner, creating a trampoline or 'bounce' effect known as COR, which promotes extra distance. From January 2008 restrictions will be placed on both clubhead size and COR in competitive play.

Manufacturers have also recently begun using titanium in conjunction with ultra lightweight graphite, enabling the weight to be positioned lower and further back. This will help you get the ball flying high for better carry, with less spin so it hits the ground running.

Many golf drivers now have moveable tungsten weights, allowing you to alter the club's weight distribution. If you tend to fade the ball you can position the weights to promote a draw and vice versa. You can move them to encourage a lower or higher ball flight, too. Check out the Taylor Made r7 425 and Masters MC-Z700.

With so much choice, there's no easy answer when it comes to choosing the right clubhead design. The best advice is to try a range of styles and see what works best for you.

Loft
A club with the wrong loft can have a devastating impact on performance. If struck correctly, a lower lofted club face will produce more distance, but if you tend to slice, you are likely to need a higher loft. As a general rule, high-handicappers or golfers with slower swing speeds should opt for 11 degrees or higher, while low handicappers should plump for 10 degrees or lower.

Shaft
The importance of the shaft on your golf driver is often underestimated, but can have a huge effect on your game. The basic choice is between steel and graphite shafts - generally, graphite is more expensive than steel and less durable. Its lighter weight provides greater swing speed for more power, but it sacrifices control due to the flex generated during the swing. These days the majority of golf drivers come with graphite shafts as standard, and it is especially suited to lady golfers and seniors who cannot produce the swing speed to use a steel shaft effectively. There are also multi-material options available which aim to combine the control of steel with the 'whip' and speed of graphite. But there is more to consider; beyond the material, you also need to think about flex, torque, kick-point and weight.

Shaft Flex - Flex is the ability of the shaft to bend as you swing. As a general rule, beginners and players with less powerful swings will benefit from a more flexible shaft. Players with an average swing speed tend to need a regular flex, while golfers with a more powerful swing benefit from a stiffer flex. But this is not the whole story. A tendency to hook or slice will affect your choice of flex, as will your swing action, be it smooth or jerky.

Shaft Torque - In conjunction with flex, you need to think about torque, which is the shaft's ability to twist. This usually ranges between 3 and 6 degrees, and the more torque a shaft has, the softer it will feel. In general, weaker players need more torque - low torque shafts twist less and are recommended for stronger players, and generate a lower ball trajectory.

Shaft Kick-Point - The effect of the exact position of the kick-point - where the shaft bends - is small but measurable. A shaft with a high kick-point will usually give a low shot trajectory and more of a "one-piece" feel to shaft. A low kick-point will usually give a high shot trajectory and a feeling of the shaft tip whipping the clubhead through.

Shaft Weight - Lighter, more flexible shafts are useful for players with slower swing speeds as they help increase clubhead speed, which in turn promotes extra distance. Heavier shafts give better control and feel to stronger players. More expensive clubs are likely to use better quality shafts, so you tend to get what you pay for.

The Grip
Last, but by no means least, you need to find a grip you are comfortable with. Obviously the size of your hands will determine your grip size, but the material is also an important consideration and is very much a matter of personal choice. Multi-compound grips are currently the rage, combining a stiff inner rubber sleeve for adhesion with a soft gel rubber outer for comfort and vibration absorption. There are even grips that feature graphics to aid with hand alignment.
