Definitely not for beginners - onlyaymie - Smyrna, GA USA
Although the cover and introduction made this book seem like it would be a good way to learn basics, reading it really was not a lot of help. The book repeatedly uses terms without defining them, and changes subjects with little transition. I feel no better prepared to learn golf than I did before I read this book.

Other gripes:
The book has Augusta National described as being in Atlanta, Georgia, instead of in Augusta, Georgia.
As the chapters wore on, it became a lot more about Gary Player and what Gary Player thought than about golf in general.

The Correct Golf Grip is the Foundation on Which to Improve and Keep Improving Your Game

Once we realise that the grip is the only connection between the player and the golf club - we will also realise why it is so crucial to get this part of our game right. Essentially, we need to achieve the correct golf grip.

Placing your hands correctly on the club will give you the best possible control of the club face at impact with the ball. For the perfect grip, the club should be held in the fingers more than in the palm of the hand.

Beginning with your left hand (right handed golfers), lay the grip across your fingers` joints - running at an angle from the base joint of your little finger to the first joint of your index finger. Wrap your fingers around the grip and place your thumb to the right side of the shaft (left side for left-handers). When you look down at the back of your hand, you should see two knuckles - those of your index and middle fingers.

Place your right hand below your left hand on the shaft, (reverse for left-handers), using either the overlap or interlocking grip. Initially, as with any change you make to your swing, set-up, grip, etc. it will feel rather strange, but after some time and practice it will soon become second nature.

Another important element which, helps with the correct golf grip, is the wearing of a glove. The reason for wearing a glove is to enable us to grip the club as lightly as possible while still having control of it. The lighter we are able to grip the club, the faster we are able to swing - which in turn generates more club head speed, which equals greater distance.

We can also use the glove as an indicator of an incorrect grip - if you notice excessive wear in the heel or palm of your glove, then your grip may need some adjustment or fine-tuning.

Getting Started in Golf Review

I first read this gem in 1963, when I was just learning the game. I have re-read it every few years since, and still get something out of it each time.

It is admittedly dated, with the subsequent development of graphite and composite shafts, "metal-woods", hybrids and new ball technology (and other improvements). But the basic principles are still just as valid now as they were then; the grip, the basic swing, the mental game/strategy. The unique last chapter or two, where you literally play a few holes with the author, instilled in me with the belief that I would learn to play well, and quickly. (MAYBE not in the very first round, like I believed then, but, I was 13 !!! )( And I did learn to play well.)

I have taught maybe 20-25 people to play over the years, from scratch. And, with each one, their games soared once they digested the information in this little classic.

I would recommend it to any beginner at any time -- tho' they need to be made aware of the outmoded sections before they rack their intellect trying to find the old shafts, balls, etc., in this day and age.

Still, it is a real little diamond, hidden among a vast array of beginner's texts. Its popularity here on Amazon attests to its value.

I liked this book because it's small and concise and it tells you just what you need to know. As a beginner golfer I learned all the essentials that are valid today even though this book was published back in 1964. I think some things in the book should be updated but I still keep it in my bag as reference. Great all around book for the beginner golfer and for the price.

For years I've been developing a solid swing based on solid fundamentals. It has always looked good and has been envied by young and old alike, mostly for the power it can generate. I've worked hard at making it look effortless and professional. When it came down to it, though, I found that my swing couldn't keep the ball in play consistently. I kept throwing away drives, and I have come to expect at least one train wreck hole per 9. I've been stuck at a mid-teen handicap for a while now. I knew I was missing 1 key ingredient that prevented me from hitting all the fairways and greens I want to hit. I found my final key in this book. It's an unnecessarily verbose book, but all one needs to know about hitting a golf ball only fills up 1 page. If you have a single digit handicap, then don't bother reading this book, as you won't find anything useful here. If you feel that one little something is missing from your swing, you may find it here. If you play worse than bogey golf, then this book is invaluable and should be required reading.

It is worthwhile to note that what the author describes is nothing new. He simply stresses that which goes unstressed or unsaid in many other reference materials. He gives full credit where credit is due and very carefully and diligently cites his references.

This book has all the instruction you will ever need to play exceptional golf.While it is a bit wordy and written in an old English style, I feel that is part of it's charm.If you're patient, you will uncover the timeless truths of great golf.A steady head, correct start back, a good turn and proper first move in the downswing are all there is to learn.I've studied golf extensively, all modern teaching is junk.Stick to these old principles.

If you are not a technical golfer, then I highly recommend this book to you. Very simple and unlike some other reviews; I found it a great read. I've read it twice now, and will probably read it again when I'm on vacation this summer.



Less is more - Charles R. Rhodes -
Most of us have way too much stuff running around in our head from reading lots of books, articles, the golf channel, et. al. What we need are the absolute basic underlying fundamentals, the fewer the better. This gives us that but many won't appreciate it because to the well read there appears to be nothing new--but their is. He adds the emphasis and doesn't dilute the lesson with hundreds of other instructions. That's what good coachs do, repeat the fundamentals over and over. Since you have heard it, you think you know it but you don't have a clue. Practice these fundamentals for a month and forget about all the other stuff you think you know. For me this is close to impossible, but I will try. I just wish he could have boiled it down to one fundamental!
In my opinion he is too modest by saying the book is not for single digit handicappers. How many of them (and pros)have you seen violating these very fundamentals?
One other thought, the golf instruction industry is about "new" things and new termonology in order to sell stuff, and whether we acutally know more than what is included in Ben Hogan's works is very suspect to me.

A Facebook Game - A Dino Balls Review

Dino Balls is one of the few collection games in Social Games and it has made to the public in Facebook. Like most of the game provided by Social Games, Dino Balls is a simple yet addictive to play. This week we will review the game and see what makes this game so addictive.

Gameplay

Dino Ball is a type of shoot and destroys gem puzzle game. The game is made in a very simple yet fun concept. Eliminate all the gems before it reaches to the Dino Egg.

The game does comes with a simple instruction when you launch it. When I mean simple, I do mean simple. There is not even a page for it, just a pop up box telling you what to do! How simple is that?

Dino Balls is represented in two areas, the map and the game itself. During the start player will be shown a map and how much progress has the player made since the start of the game. There will be 9 main levels all together and to reach it, it is rather challenging. Even for a normal player like me to reach the first stage takes a few times.

Once you hit play, the game takes you to the puzzle zone where your Dino will hold a color gem and try to match the combination of the other gems with the same color. Hit the wrong gems and the line get longer. Hit it correctly and you eliminate a line of gems.

Power ups are also available in this game. Things like explosion, targeting assistance and slow down is provided as players go by. This is really a great help since the game move quite fast and some player might have a hard time trying to catch up with it.

Graphic

The graphic is very plain and simple graphic as it is not very colorful nor attractive. This is the part which I guess this game falls short of. It would be more attractive if the game more colorful. However, at least I find the Dino design is rather cute.

Sound

Normal sound you get from flash game, however the music does change from level to level, which is a great improvement. Popping sound of gems as it explodes is also great to hear.

Conclusion

This is a fun and exciting game to play which can last for hours. Drawback is the graphic and also the part that if you fail, you will get an annoying pop up keep asking you to share your score to the world.

I give this game a 3.5 out of 5 rating.

The Golf Instruction Manual Review

My first impression of the book is MULTI-FUNCTIONAL. The book has very clear text, diagrams, pictures and written in an easy to understand language. Diagrams in various sizes with clear notations to make any student "marvel in amazement" at this organized book.

A big WOW from me.

The book is NOT a narrative story that just happens to have some basics thrown in, as a requirement. Nor does it try and show off a professional life and times. This book is for students of the game.

The book has a disciplined fundamental approach to golf with key tips on the grip, the swing, addressing the ball, understanding why a ball hooks, chipping, putting, and so on. Teaching in building blocks that are strongly supported by images, diagrams and text descriptions.

The book goes into level two golf, talking about acceleration of ball, reading the green, correct allignment for various shots. This is like a handbook for those in the first year beginner to fifth year of playing golf. It shows advanced techniques such as the push and pull shots. Swing play from an angle on a hill, etc.

The book is NOT a story of golf jokes. Nor does it dwell on past times and memories of a guy or gal playing back in the good old days. If you want a fiction book, or a good bed side read -- forget this. You need to be a student, and want to learn.

The book also talks about buying the right equipment. Wow, this is great information. Also about golf etiquiette and golf rules. If I am to ever
teach golf, this would be a required reading. If I am to take any courses in golf, I hope they teach from this book.

But wait, I am just an "amazon" kind of guy. So, there you have it.

Thru inactivity my golf game had deteriorated so much that I no longer wanted to play. When I would go to the range I would mostly hit hosel rockets. I bought this book, Golf Mags Best Instruction Book Ever, a cheap hitting mat, some wiffle balls and a Swingyde to help gauge my wrist hinge. A month later and I think my swing may be the best it has ever been. Both books offered tips that helped me build a correct and more dependable swing.

I have been playing golf for 2 months (took lessons,pored over videos on internet,read many books including Hogan's,Hank Haney's,Leadbetter's, read golf magazines such as Golf Digest and Golf Tips) and I would say this book is one I take to the practice range. At the end of each practice session,I write down a list of what went right and what went wrong. I then flip through the section that covers my problem (the book is well organized for that),learn the drill,fixes and comments on that. Next session,I implement it. It almost always helps.
2 points:Since still pictures and wording can leave a few things unclear, you might have to look up additional sources such as another book/video/professional once in a while. Secondly, as another reviewer noted, in one or two places in the book (of nearly 150 pages),there is what seems to be contradictory advice (one instructor says start high, another says low). In a few other places where you think the same thing's happening,upon careful reading,the shots are slightly different.
Overall, an excellent bargain. You can buy the book alone without DVD for less than 12 bucks. Even better deal as the DVD is limited.

Golf Swing Tip Instructions - How To Draw The Ball

If you want to learn the secret to drawing the ball, then these golf swing tip instructions will give you some much needed help.

If you're like most golfers, slicing the ball has never been a part of your golf game that you've needed to practice on, it's just come naturally. But, drawing the ball is a different story. You're not alone though, as upwards of 90% of all golfers have problems with slicing the ball.

So, how do you go about changing that and start hitting a draw? Here are some quick tips.

1. We're going to assume that you are right-handed. If not you just need to reverse these instructions. You begin by taking a 5-iron and setting up to the ball as you normally do.

2. Now, you will need to move your feet to the right of your intended target area. To get the correct angle is going to take some practice, but begin with 10 degrees right of your target. If that's not enough, then you can simply make more adjustments.

3. Next, you will maintain the face of your 5-iron pointing at your intended target.

4. Maintain your normal golf grip and swing at the ball. Keep your regular follow through.

If you have several balls in a row that hook too much, or not enough, make some additional adjustments with your stance.

As with any golf swing tip instructions, the key to success is practice. With that in mind, keep these points in mind:

-Practice drawing the golf ball with every club in your bag.

-Don't change your regular golf swing. Make the adjustments with your stance or grip, but you don't want to change your golf swing.

-Start out drawing the ball slightly to allow your body and your mind to get a feel for it. You can always practice more serious draws in due time.

-Consider taking a golf lesson if you can. You can find more information on golf tips and lessons at the end of this article.

Learning to hit a simple draw is not difficult if you put these golf swing tip instructions to work for you. In fact, I believe you can be hitting it consistently in a short amount of time. As you do, you'll start to notice increased distance and no more slices.

Perfect Golf Swing Made Easy

If you're like most golfers, you want to improve, not just hack around the golf course. Golf is a difficult game to master and most golfers don't have the time it takes to practice, practice, and practice to significantly improve. You may receive all the greatest golf tips in the world, take countless lessons and get superior instruction and still may not be able to gain consistency.

If you've hit with your golf driver perfectly once, you can do it every time; the subconscious mind knows the correct number and sequence of muscle contractions and nerve impulses needed, called muscle memory. Approach the game with a positive attitude and repeat affirmations if you can, such as "I play great golf all the time." Concentrate totally on your game and you'll get the best score.

When you swing if you have problems with your left knee buckling, imagine you're holding a soccer ball between your knees. At the end of a backswing the hands are above the right shoulder, with the golf club pointing more or less in the intended direction of ball flight. Standing over the ball for too long a time and wondering whether you're going to swing the club correctly can easily result in a skewed shot, or completely missing the ball.

Before you swing, make sure you're relaxed; contract all your muscles tightly for a moment and then relax them. Use the muscles in your legs and trunk when you swing. Accomplished golfers purposely use sidespin to steer their ball around obstacles or towards the safe side of fairways and greens.

The backswing is a rotation to the right, consisting of a shifting of the player's body weight to the right side, a turning of the pelvis and shoulders, lifting of the arms and flexing of the elbows and wrists. Sidespin occurs when the clubface is not aligned perpendicularly to the plane of swing. Many golfers who are strongly left-handed in their daily life prefer the right-handed golf swing.

One of the problems that most inexperienced golfers share is they think too much about their swing. The most important thing about the golf swing is the angle and not the strength that's applied to it.

Hold a medicine ball and turn back and forth; it must be rotational to improve your driving distance. Once you understand that you can change your swing by using a simple technique, you'll never underestimate golf fitness again. You can get rid of shoulder problems with some simple techniques.

Most of all don't waste your money on a golf swing aid you don't need or will never use. Before buying any golf swing aid, check with an expert to get an idea of what problem you need to work on first; backlift of golf swing, momentum of downward thrust or stance for example.
