Knowledge and Experience Are Needed to Improve Your Golf Swing

Almost every golfer wants to learn to improve her/his golf swing but it is not an easy task. In fact it can be quite frustrating. The golfer can gain knowledge by reading books or watching DVD's or taking lessons from a pro or instructor. But such knowledge does not easily transfer to an improved swing. The golfer can practice hours on end, at a range or on a course, but practicing an imperfect swing does not help either. These learning disappointments can best be explained through educational research.

Such research is telling us that experience alone is not learning. One can have 20 years experience in a particular job or with a particular physical action but it may be just one year's experience, duplicated for 20 years. And knowledge alone is not learning. One can memorize the content of many books but such content may not be useful unless it can be applied to a specific situation when needed. Educational research tells us that it is the "click," the "connection" between experience and knowledge that produces learning. Some call this "bridge" an "A-ha".......that "Eureka, I have found it" feeling.....that one experiences when learning really occurs.

So how does the golfer gain such learning for an improved swing? Here are some steps to follow.

  1. First, you must know what a good swing looks like. This knowledge can be gained by reading golf instruction books, by watching DVD's or low handicap or professional golfers.

  2. Next, it would be useful to know where your swing differs from the desired swing. An experienced instructor and/or video analysis can offer specific knowledge about your swing.

  3. Identify one aspect of your swing that you want to improve and gain the data needed to incorporate that aspect into your swing.

  4. Gain a vision, a mental picture of your desired swing

  5. It is now time to gain experience with your envisioned swing. You must practice that aspect on the course or at the range. Here is where you can further employ the help of your instructor to see if you are incorporating the "fix" into your swing.

  6. Stick with your practice until you get that "A-ha;" until the desired aspect is part of your swing and your vision of that aspect becomes a reality.

  7. Repeat Step 3 with another aspect of your desired swing.

  8. Continue the process until you are pleased with your new and improved swing.

Learning a good golf swing requires a combination of knowledge and experience; information on what aspects are needed for that good swing and practice to incorporate those aspects into your swing. It requires dedication and can take some time but a good swing can be achieved by any golfer by following the above steps.
