The Art of the Short Game: Tour-Tested Secrets for Getting Up and Down Review

I've played the game for 50+ years with a "sure hope this gets close" short game. What I "know" about the short game I've taught myself, learned from observation or gleaned from 30 or more instructional books. I'm sure you've been there more than once...buy the book with good intentions, struggle through the first 25 pages of "overlap X and Y then decrease the angle of blah, blah, blah". The book goes on the shelf with the rest of them and it's back to "hit and hope". This book was totally different...brief and to the point with instruction that I can call, without exaggeration, game changing. Two suggestions...read the book all the way through and then go back and pick up the details. Won't take long because there are only 4 moves that will forever change the way you approach the short game. Suggestion 2...to tie everything together you may need to see what you read...go on Youtube (put Stan Utley in search) and watch Mr. Utley hit some shots. I made some notes (4 lines on in index card) and went to the practice green. It took all of 20-25 minutes to get it together but the improvement was nothing short of remarkable. If you are serious about your game and want to get better, buy this book.

The Art of the Short Game: Tour-Tested Secrets for Getting Up and Down Overview

"The hottest instructor in golf" (Sports Illustrated) takes on old-school gurus with a far more accessible, intuitive, and innovative approach to those essential chip shots, pitches, and bunker rescues.

Veteran golfers know that the secret to a lower score is a solid short game, but mastering those small strokes can be maddening—even for the pros. One of golf’s most revered instructors, Stan Utley now reveals the step-by-step tactics behind his revolutionary short-game techniques in The Art of the Short Game.

After introducing readers to his groundbreaking philosophy that explains why most players don’t see all the shots available to them near the green, Utley moves on to shatter conventional wisdom about stance, grip, and ball position. From choosing the right clubs (including a checklist of must-haves that should always be in your bag) to spin reduction during chipping and fearless sand play, The Art of the Short Game demystifies the most aggravating shots on the links. Though Utley’s primer features a full set of drills, accompanied by more than seventy-five photos, his approach is far removed from the monotonous, mechanical instruction of yesteryear.

Giving a time-tested secret weapon to every golfer at every level, Utley’s short-game methods turn trouble shots into triumph.

There is nothing there - M. Young -
I read the two forwards, introduction and first five chapters: HOW TO SAVE YOUR SCORE,THE BASICS, FINDING THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT, THE ART OF CHIPPING, AND THE ART OF PITCHING. I found the book to have little useful information, so I have stopped reading the library book. I found the content vague. (I had someone read a few chapters, and they looked bewildered by the "fluffiness.")

The pictures do not follow the text, and often contradict the text. For example, "For a chip, my feet are usually about the width of a clubhead apart--four to five inches." Page 48. Chip color picture after page 46, shows Utley in chip shot setup. A USGA approved golfball is not less than 1.68 inches in diameter. His feet are more than 3 golf balls apart. Is Utley using a big ball? "Usually" a teacher wants to show what he is teaching a student to "usually" do. BTW, page 68, picture 6 and page 69, picture 7 are identical.

BTW, I find the Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible: Master the Finesse Swing and Lower Your Score (Dave Pelz Scoring Game Series) too mechanical for my tastes, but at least he is not too vague. Shrug.

i WISH IT WAS ON DVD - Michael Keane - Ireland

Cured my "Yips on the Chips!" - Austen D. Schroeder -
Stan Utley writes in easy to understand language and his instruction really works! I've been getting up in two and end up four strokes later over par! This book has brought me back into the game with a better short game and lower scores!
