Golf Tips - Golf Swing Lag Drills

So you want to add some distance to your golf shot do you? Sure you do why else would you be here? Golf swing lag is your ticket to hitting that longer shot. First I'm going to tell you a little bit about golf swing lag. Basically what you are trying to do is make it so the head of your golf club lags behind the rest of the club.

This is where most of the power in your golf swing comes from. Swinging as hard as you can like a lumberjack will not even create as much power as a little bit of lag in your swing.
I am going to give you a few drills to try to help you practice creating lag and to get the feel when you are doing it properly.

The first thing to remember is your grip. I am sure you have heard this before but having a loose grips is one of the most important things when trying to create lag in your swing. A lot of people tend to hold the club too tight which is costing them a lot of power. Do not do this!

Next you can try this nice easy drill that you can practice right at home. All you need is a dish rag. Now just swing the dish rag as if you were swinging your golf club. You'll notice with the dish rag you are creating lag if you want to or not. Just focus when you are starting to come forward with your swing and you will see and feel the top of the rag is trailing far behind. This is exactly what you want to make your golf club do when you swing it.

This last one is more about the thought involved when trying to create lag. Think about a bucket of water. One of those buckets with the handle that swings back and forth. Now think about what you would have to do to swing that bucket of water like a golf club but without spilling the water in the bucket. This is only going to happen if you let the bottom of the bucket trail behind your hands at all times and not pause at the top of your swing but to make a fluid motion keeping the water in the bucket. This is a very similar process to creating lag in your golf swing.
